Let me take a different route; The Jane Austen series are amazing pieces of literature. I can't put them down, mine are worn and rugged because they captivate me. Why? I'm a book nerd; bluntly. I can't stop reading. But - let's face it. Most teens have not read the Jane Austen series even though they are great. Why? It's hard for them to understand; to grasp. Stephenie has taken teens who would not open a book and turned them into crazed fans. So what if her writing is not elaborate? It's a huge accomplishment, imo.
We're not even talking about elaborate writing. A Great and Terrible Beauty isn't elaborate, but it's good. Uglies isn't elaborate, but it's good. A Ring of Endless Light isn't elaborate, but it's good. Twilight, as I said before, is like a Twinkie...it's not good, and it's not good for you, but sometimes, you just crave a bit of fluff.
------- Let yourself be enchanted, You just might break through To ever ever after

Ah, but the only of those books that are even semi well known is The Uglies, and that's because it's always on the shelf right next to Twilight. That sure says something.

I think Cleolinda on LiveJournal put it best: The Twilight books are like Twinkies. Twinkies are not a gourmet dessert and, really, aren't very good for you. If you want to ingest that number of calories and ruin your figure, there are many tastier desserts you could choose, but sometimes, you're just craving the not-so-good fluff of a Twinkie. Same is true of Twilight. As far as writing and plot go, the books are extremely lacking and, it could be argued, the only real three-dimensional character in the whole series is Jacob Black. But sometimes, you need something that's not-so-good and fluffy...and, in this case, sparkly. That said, anyone who's going to argue that the Twilight books are great literature should be strapped down and forced to read Jane Austen novels until her eyes fall out.
Absolutely agree!
------- Let go.
