I disagree with people who don't like her writing style. Since when has their been an author of a teen series that wrote books like Jane Austen writes? Let's face it. The majority of teenage readers want simple books that they can really submerge themself in. Twilight is very well written for teens.

If you want to review some of Stephenie's adult work I reccomend you purchase The Host. I'm a huge book worm and have read every Jane Austen, Lolita, Les miserables - the list goes on... anyhow; The Host is an amazing novel. Very well written and you wouldn't know it was the same author of twilight.

So first you say that "Twilight" is well written, but then you contrast taht by saying that "The Host" is well written so you wouldn't know it was written by the same person who wrote "Twilight."

"Twilight" is not well written for teens. I can name a good half-dozen books off the top of my head that are well written for teens, with similar themes but lacking the fluff and Mary Sue ness of Twilight.

We're not even talking about elaborate writing. A Great and Terrible Beauty isn't elaborate, but it's good. Uglies isn't elaborate, but it's good. A Ring of Endless Light isn't elaborate, but it's good.

Twilight, as I said before, is like a Twinkie...it's not good, and it's not good for you, but sometimes, you just crave a bit of fluff.

Ah, but the only of those books that are even semi well known is The Uglies, and that's because it's always on the shelf right next to Twilight. That sure says something.

Again, refer to earlier in this topic where I pointed out that teenagers don't care about good writing. They care about pretending that they are Bella Swan, that their only problem is being too interesting and too beautiful and having too many personality-lacking pretty boys wanting to date/marry them. It's the wish fulfillment thing, but that does not, in any way, make them good writing.

I really can't believe someone who can read and appreciate something like Nabokov's Lolita (one of the most beautiful works of prose) can stomach something like the Twilight series.

Just because something is considered to be teen fiction doesn't mean it's supposed to consist of weak plot lines and characterizations. Teen fiction isn't necessarily "simple". I just think your analysis of teen fiction is a little more than demeaning.

Nabokov's Lolita was great prose but very disturbing.  I enjoyed the storyline of Twilight much more. Twilight is entertaining; Lolita is..There isn't even a word to describe it. I finished it; but sometimes I was highly disturbed.

You'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't find Lolita's plot disturbing. You'd also be hard pressed to find someone who will argue Nabokov can't write well.

I don't like to compare Lolita to Twilight (attempting to compare Meyer to Nabokov is just silly and will prove futile), but to not find Lolita entertaining is utterly failing to understand it. It's very clever and witty, and Nabokov's ease with words should be enough to astound anyone.

If the choice came down to a thought provoking and controversial novel against a few books with dialogue straight from a Harlequin romance and poor characterization-- I'd take the former straight away.

Back on topic: I don't understand the appeal of the Twilight series and I will never ever understand the number of people who swear by those books. People should know better.

Again, it boils down to the whole wish fulfillment thing. While there may be a handful of teenage girls who don't want it, most that I can think of would absolutely love to be the prettiest and most sought-after girl in school and have the most beautiful, mysterious (and immortal) boy in love with them. They're living vicariously through Bella.

I'd like to know why you consider Harry Potter as fluff.

I don't consider it a great literary work either, but I don't think it's pure fluff. And I hate any comparison with it to the Twilight books.

I think Cleolinda on LiveJournal put it best:

The Twilight books are like Twinkies.  

Twinkies are not a gourmet dessert and, really, aren't very good for you. If you want to ingest that number of calories and ruin your figure, there are many tastier desserts you could choose, but sometimes, you're just craving the not-so-good fluff of a Twinkie.

Same is true of Twilight. As far as writing and plot go, the books are extremely lacking and, it could be argued, the only real three-dimensional character in the whole series is Jacob Black. But sometimes, you need something that's not-so-good and fluffy...and, in this case, sparkly.  

That said, anyone who's going to argue that the Twilight books are great literature should be strapped down and forced to read Jane Austen novels until her eyes fall out.
